Are Logs Better Than
Our Hardwood Bio-Briquettes?
If you have used logs for years and years and see them as a cheaper and better burning alternative to our Hardwood Briquettes, then think again. The only realistic way to compare the value of logs and briquettes is by the Calorific Value; not by weight or mass. One of the most important things to note when buying your wood fuel is the moisture content of the product you're burning. This basically means, as far as burning is concerned, the lower the moisture content, the hotter the fuel will burn, and the better the value you will be getting. Our Bio-Briquettes are so incredibly compact that this means they burn far longer than hardwood logs, as well as hotter.
Here are some key facts to note about Seasoned and Kiln Dried Logs, bearing in mind that our Hardwood Briquettes are put through strict quality checks and average 5.1% moisture content.
- Newly felled timber ranges from 40% to 60% moisture content. This means 50% of the weight, is literally water.
- Seasoning wood (for around one year) should bring the moisture content to around 30% depending on ambient conditions.
- Kiln drying should lower the moisture content down to an average of 20%.
Wood that is left outside to season can only become as dry as the ambient weather conditions allow, meaning the end product of seasoned logs can only become as dry as the surrounding atmosphere.
